Connections to Text in Language Arts

There are 3 kinds of connections to text;

  1. text to self
  2. text to text
  3. text to world

When reading The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate, I made three different textual connections as I was reading.

Text to Self

When I read about Ivan saying he was bored, it made me think of how I don't know what it is like to be bored.  Even when I was a young kid, I always found something to do.  My mother said I was good at entertaining myself.  When my children say they are bored, I tell them I don't know what they mean.

Text to Text

The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate reminds me of the book Anne of Green Gables by Lucy. M. Montgomery because Ivan and Anne both use a lot of description when they talk about things.  Anne often talks for 2-3 pages straight without stopping.  Ivan doesn't talk as much but uses a lot of description.

Text to World

When i was thinking of Anne of Green Gables, due to Ivan's description, use of a lot of good words and use of similes, Anne also made me think of how Anne of Green Gables was in every single elementary and junior high school classroom in which I taught in Japan.  I don't know why the people of Japan loved Anne so much but every year many people from Japan visit Anne's house in Prince Edward Island.
