Good morning,

As we wrap up another week, I'd like to dedicate our ELA time to completing a reading journal. In this journal, I would like for you to use what you already know in your book to predict what will happen next. The journal should be half a page in length, but it can be longer if you like.

Your journal should include three key components.
     1. A brief summary of what is/has been happening in your novel (ie what you already know).
     2. A prediction of what you think will happen next.
     3. An explanation of why you think that will happen. Pull evidence and examples from the text.

As always, please include your name, date, title (Reading Journal November 12th), and be sure to include the title of your book so I know what you're writing about! Let me know on Teams or email if you have any questions.

Since we were working on our Indigenous projects in class, we have been stuck in limbo. If we are still home next week, we will begin our next unit, Physical Geography of Atlantic Canada. For today, I would like you to explore the following videos on YouTube

Good Morning,

1. Let's start today with a 10 minute quick write: What do you see as the biggest problem facing your generation today? Explain why.

2. We've been doing lots of writing in language arts and should have 4 paragraphs worth of retelling, reviewing, reflecting, and relating on Fish Cheeks by Amy Tan. I want to give you the remainder of today's ELA time to either get caught up on your work, or get some extra reading time in. Contact me if you need any help on your work.

3. Tomorrow is Remembrance Day, so no school work will be assigned. Please take the time to reflect on why we remember and honour those who have served.

Today, we will be finishing up our 4R's reading comprehension activity. The final "R" we will be writing about is reviewing. In this paragraph I want you to write about what you liked/disliked about the memoir. What would you rate it out of 5 stars? Why? Make sure to explain and identify the specific parts that you liked or disliked.

As always, contact me on teams or through email if you have any questions!

Greetings,

I will be scheduling a Teams meeting for tomorrow at 11am, in case you have any questions about the work, school, or just want to touch base! See you then.

We will be continuing our 4R's reading comprehension assignment for Fish Cheeks. For today, we are going to write another paragraph, this time focusing on reflecting.

Use these prompts to help guide you. You can model or organize your paragraph by responding to them:
1. If you could talk to the author and ask them any question, what would it be? Why would you ask these questions?
2. What did you learn about the author's experience? About society? How does this text help me understand the point that the Author is trying to make?
3. What stood out to me?
4. If you have existing knowledge or experience regarding the Author's message, what is it?

The goal isn't to answer all of these questions, rather use them as inspiration for your reflection. Choose one that stands out the most to you and run with it! If you need help, please message me either on Teams or through e-mail, and we can work it out!

Today, we will be continuing our 4R's assignment. This time, I would like you to focus on relating. By relating a text to something else, we create a deeper understanding of the content by creating connections to knowledge or experiences you've already had.

Here are your instructions.

1. Write a paragraph focusing on one of the following: text-to-text, text-to-self, text to media, or text to world connections with the memoir Fish Cheeks
2. Finish your paragraph with a statement explaining why being able to relate or connect to a memoir is important.

Text-to-text connections occur when something in the text reminds the reader of a previously read text.
Text-to-self connections occur when something in the text reminds the reader of a personal experience.
Text-to-media connections occur when something in the text reminds the reader of another piece of media (television show, movie, video game, etc.)
Text-to-world connections occur when something in the text reminds the reader of a current event or knowledge you have.

Fish Cheeks tells a story about a child dealing with the frustrations of growing up in a foreign country, something not all of us can relate to. However, we are still able to make connections thanks to the theme and the personal and emotional voice Amy Tan incorporates in her writing. We don't need to be a Chinese immigrant living in the United States to make connections to the memoir. Thinking about the theme of your own memoir, will people be able to make their own connections in your writing?

As always, send me a message on Teams or email me if you have any questions. Once you've completed your work for the day, take a deep breath and give yourself a pat on the back. Online learning can be a frustrating and challenging experience, and you just completed a whole weeks worth of it. Have a nice weekend!
