Grade 8 Math:

Students are currently working on a Problem-based Math project.  They have been given the task of coming up with a problem that can be solved through Math related to their Grade 8 Curriculum.  From using Pythagorean Theorem to build a shelter on an island, to using the 3D printer to test which shape of pillar (with the same volume and height) can support the most weight. Stay tuned!

Grade 6 Tech/Shop:

All restaurant menus on PowerPoint were to be completed before Christmas break. Students are currently working on general shop safety, Band Saw and Drill Press Safety and then designing marionettes.

Grade 7 Tech/Shop:

All Technical drawings were to be completed yesterday.  Work has already begun on Rockets! Students will need to pass the Band Saw Safety exam again with 100%.

Grade 8 Tech/Shop:

Balloon launch was scheduled to happen today or tomorrow.  If that is not possible, we will start work on CO2 cars and will launch balloons next week.

There's always something interesting going on at Harkins Middle.  This week, sign-ups started for the new and improved HMS Tech club now known as "The STEM Cell"!  Mrs. Hamilton and Ms. Waye have been working hard to get the new Makerspace up and running and can't wait to get the students creating, engineering, tinkering and making!  The name STEM comes from Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics and this space will be an area where students get to explore new technologies such as LittleBits (circuits that do very cool things like automatically feed your fish from work!), Makey Makey (make a game controller out of bananas!), 3D printing (need we say more?!), Lego Robotics and more! Keep an eye on the Harkins Website, Our STEM North website: http://stemnorth.nbed.nb.ca/content/hms-stem-cell and on Twitter: @TheSTEMCell_HMS

The STEM Cell has placed a sign-up sheet outside Mrs. Hamilton's room.  Days and times of the club will be announced after reviewing the sign-up sheets. Deadline to sign up is Friday, Jan 8th, 2016.
