8E Home Learning: Lesson Two

Please use today as a “work period” to work on your Christmas Break Narrative. As this is due by end of day tomorrow – and we have a Teams call tomorrow – today is the day to put some serious time into this piece of writing.

Also, please have a look in the “files” section of our team, as I dropped some notes on persuasive writing and a brief definition of “proper paragraph” into the class materials folder. We will be discussing persuasive writing during our Teams call tomorrow. Good luck. And as always, I am available throughout the day if you have any questions.

Posted: January 12, 2022

Today we will be answering some questions from the textbook. These questions are similar to those in yesterday's lesson, and deal with variables and expressions.

Please click the link below to see the page from the textbook. Please complete questions # 1, 3, 4, 5, and 6a. You do not need to do #2, or 6b.

Good Luck.

7E/7P Language Arts

Write a response to the following prompt: If you had to choose your five favorite celebrities, who would they be and why? A celebrity is a famous person. This could include movie stars, rock stars/musicians, athletes (like hockey or basketball players), social media personalities, youtubers, etc.

Instructions: spend 10 to 12 minutes writing your response (it’s okay to think/brainstorm beforehand – but you should be writing for the allotted time). Your response should begin with a list, followed by a few short paragraphs detailing your reasons for choosing these five people. Remember, you could have chosen anyone…you must have your reasons for choosing these individuals.

Weekly writing assignment:  Choose one interesting anecdote (something fun or interesting that happened) from your Christmas vacation. You will write a mini version of a memoir on this event.

Instructions: spend 15 to 20 minutes writing on this event today. You will be given a block of time during each language arts period this week to write on this event. Your final finished product must be a minimum of four proper paragraphs, and a maximum of one and half pages in length. This is due be end of day Friday.

Both writing assignments listed above can be submitted through the “assignments” tab in Teams.

7P – Home Learning Lesson One

Good morning class. Today we will focus on Social Studies and Math.

Social Studies:  today we begin Chapter 5: Life in British North America. This chapter is part of a larger unit (3), that focuses on how Canada became a country.

The first part of the lesson will be reading. I have attached photos below of pages from the textbook. Begin by reading the attached pages in the order they are listed. Remember to take your time when reading, and to try to figure out what is important in the text. Read to understand the material, not simply to finish the material.

Once you have finished reading, try to make some of your own notes on important points. Ask yourself questions like: what was important in that section? and is there anything I probably need to remember from today’s reading? Try to come up with a minimum of five important points.

Now we will move on to Math. Today’s lesson will be a review of variables and expressions from before Christmas break. Please read through the entire review section before attempting to answer the questions.

Below is a link to a Smart notebook file. Please read through the first four slides, as you will need to know/review this information before attempting the questions on the fifth and final slide. Good Luck!

Home Learning:  English Language Arts – Lesson One

Write a response to the following prompt:  If you could only eat five foods for the rest of your life, what would these foods be, and why?

Instructions: spend 10 to 12 minutes writing your response (it’s okay to think/brainstorm beforehand – but you should be writing for the allotted time). Your response should begin with a list, followed by a few short paragraphs detailing your reasons for choosing these foods. Remember: you are going to be eating these foods for the remainder of your life…you must have your reasons!

Weekly writing assignment – Personal Narrative of our Christmas break

This writing piece will be due at the end of the week (Friday – 2:00 pm). A personal narrative details events on a given topic; in this case, your Christmas Break.

Instructions: Spend 15 to 20 minutes (today) writing/brainstorming this piece of writing (you will have a block of time each day to work on this short piece). You have several options when deciding how to organize this narrative. You may choose to focus on a chronological narrative (discussing events in the order in which they happened – like a timeline). You may choose to focus on interesting/fun events; you could even rank these in order of “most” to “least” fun or interesting. You may choose to focus on setting; times/places where things occurred. You may have your own method of organizing this piece of writing; it is entirely up to you how you stay organized.

Your final “finished” piece should be a minimum of five proper paragraphs and a maximum of two pages in length.

Make a note: both of these pieces of writing from today's lesson are also in your "Teams" under the Assignment link. You can submit these through Teams if you prefer.

Good morning classes.

In today's lesson we will be listening to chapter 7 of The City of Ember. Please make a list of key points from the chapter. You can do this either while you are listening, or after you have finished.

Good Luck. This will be our entire lesson today, as the chapter is quite long.

Looking forward to seeing all of you soon! Please click the link below to access the chapter.

Chapter 7:

Listen

Posted: December 6, 2021

Good morning classes. Here are a few things you can try at home today:

 - write two paragraphs about something you did during the weekend (it could even be something you are doing today)

 - read your library book for 15 minutes

 - make sure you know the difference between "simile" and "metaphor" (as we will be using both in our poems this week)

Good morning classes,

In today's lesson we will be focusing on our class novel The City of Ember. First, please read the brief summary of chapter 5. This should serve as a refresher, as we listened to it one week ago. Secondly, please listen to the read aloud from chapter 6. And finally, copy and complete the questions for chapter 6.

Chapters 5: On Night Street

Granny’s aging mind grows more muddled, so Lina has Mrs. Murdo, their neighbor, keep her company. Lina visits a store on Night Street, run by Looper, that has colored pencils, a rare commodity in Ember. There, she buys two, one green and one blue, but loses Poppy. As Lina searches for Poppy in surrounding streets, a blackout, the longest in Ember’s history, consumes the city. When the lights return, Lina finally finds Poppy and learns that Doon kept her safe in his father’s shop during the blackout.

Chapter 6: Link

Questions - please copy the questions, then answer

1. What did Mayor Cole say at the town meeting?

2. How did the people of Ember feel after Mayor Cole's speech?

3. When Lina got home, Granny was ___________.

4. What did Poppy find?

5. Describe how Lina felt during this chapter and the previous chapter.

Good Luck!

Good morning classes.

Today we will complete "Day 2" from our take home learning packet. I have copied in the instructions below, in case you cannot find yours at home. Please do not complete the "Pretest" worksheet; we will save that portion for another day.

Good Luck! Here are the instructions:

Day 2

Complete the following quick writing prompt:

Brainstorm of list of ideas of how this school year is similar (the same as) or different than previous school years. Your list should be a minimum of five ideas; the more you have, the better. Focus on one idea from your list; write about this idea in detail.  10 minutes of writing time.

Next:  Complete the PRETEST worksheet (skip this portion).

Next:  Continue “Finding the Main Idea” Worksheets (pages 7, 8, and 9).

Finally:  Read your library book for 20 minutes. When you are finished, write a brief summary of what happened. Then, activate your background knowledge to make one sensible inference and one sensible prediction. Remember, an inference is about what is currently happening, while a prediction is a guess as to what will happen next.
